MIT TEAM FIGURE OUT TO GET RID OF POWER CORDS
The team from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who call their invention 'Witricity', believe it could change the way we use electricity and do away with the tangle of cables, plugs and chargers that clutter modern homes. It could also allow the use of laptops and mobile phones without batteries.
The inspiration came when the lead researcher, Dr Marin Soljacic, was standing in his kitchen at night staring at his mobile phone. "It was probably the sixth time that month that I was awakened by my cell phone beeping to let me know that I had forgotten to charge it. It occurred to me that it would be so great if the thing took care of its own charging," he said. . .

So how much power is lost in this sort of a transfer, and is it a hazard to stand between the charger and the article being charged?
Before I get excited, I want to know the downsides.
I'd wager anything that this will become a commercial product before either of those questions is even investigated, much less answered.
Tesla was doing this in the 1890's
Why am I reminded forcefully of Heinlein's Waldo?
Just what we need: more EMFs to pollute our environment. We are already living in what is called "electronic smog." This will just increase it.
Actually Tesla's plans were on a much larger scale. He envisioned a series of towers across the world, drawing in the world's natural electrical charge and creating a field from which we could all pull electricity for free. These guys just want to do it on a small, per-house scale using power generated in the usual ways at great expense to both the consumer and the planet.
