EMENDATION

Several readers have written noting that the publisher of the :Philadelphia Gay News, which ran a partially blank page after Barack Obama declined to be interviewed, is a Clinton supporter. Wrote one: "Mark Segal,, its publisher. . . is a shameless Clintonista who gave $1000 to Hillary's campaign last fall, and so his hit on Obama just before the Pennsylvania primary is no surprise. . . Segal's hit piece on Obama has generated a lot of debate within the gay community, all the more so because he never disclosed to his readers that he was already a committed Clinton supporter and big donor. Not exactly ethical, was it? There's really not a dime's worth of difference on gay issues between Hillary and Obama (although I suspect that some Obama staffers may have thought that, while he's trying to break through with Pennsylvania Catholic working class voters, he didn't need to trumpet his pro-gay positions, whereas Hillary's lead among the toiling classes is so big, and she's so desperate, she can afford to. But both are trimmers when it comes to gay issues in much the same ways.)"

Our interest in this item was not Obama's reaction to a particular issue but as an example of how Obama likes to duck and cover when things get a little hot. It is simply not normal for a politician who wants the votes of a major constituency to avoid the media of that group.

The problem is not so much that Obama is a prig on one issue as he is a wimp on so many of them, including Iraq. Although he has presented himself as the leading opponent of the war, if you read between the lines, he plans to leave an uncertain number of troops and mercenaries there - perhaps in the tens of thousands - posing at military trainers and embassy guards. His approaches to issues are those of an extremely cautious attorney, filled with Subsection F and other alphabetic and numeric conditions.

While Obama remains the best of the lot who can win the election, you had better fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

Sorry Sam, but Obama's not simply ignoring one constituency, the gay community. He is simply catering to homophobia. Think about what it does to a candidate to openly support the gay community. Now, think about what it does to a black man. Yes, Obama is simply a coward.
