In the end, the only thing that will really improve quality of life across the planet is fewer People. Advanced countries know this and that's why their homebred populations are dropping. Third worlders know this and that's why they all want to move to the advanced countries. At some point, politicians and economists have to be weaned from their passion for "growth" models, and learn how to promote "shrink" models. Don't look for it to happen soon - politicians and economists are some of the most inflexible and stupid people on the planet.

Biden has sponsored more damaging drug war legislation than any Democrat in Congress. Hate the way federal prosecutors use RICO laws to take aim at drug offenders? Thank Biden. How about the abomination that is federal asset forfeiture laws? Thank Biden. Think federal prosecutors have too much power in drug cases? Thank Biden. Think the title of a "Drug Czar"is sanctimonious and silly? Thank Biden, who helped create the position (and still considers it an accomplishment worth boasting about). Tired of the ridiculous steroids hearings in Congress? Thank Biden, who led the effort to make steroids a Schedule 3 drug, and has been among the blowhardiest of the blowhards when it comes to sports and performance enhancing drugs. Biden voted in favor of using international development aid for drug control (think Plan Columbia, Plan Afghanistan, and other meddling anti-drug efforts that have only fostered loathing of America, backlash, and unintended consequences). Oh, and he was also the chief sponsor of 2004's horrendous RAVE Act.

Biden does appear to have eased up a bit in the last couple years, including taking a fairly strong position against federal raids on medical marijuana clinics (though he still opposes making marijuana available for medicinal purposes). But that's little consolation for all the damage he's done over the years.

Biden's record on other criminal justice and civil liberties issues is just as bad. Opponents of the federalization of crime might note that the 1994 crime bill he sponsored created several new federal capital offenses. Biden also wants to expand federal penalties for hate crimes. He supports a federal smoking ban. His position on the federal drinking age is, and I quote, "absolutely do not"lower it to 18. He believes "most violent crime is related to drugs" (if he had said "drug prohibition,"he'd be closer to the truth). Biden also has an almost perfect anti-gun voting record. He said last year he favors "universal national service," either in the Peace Corps or the military. Sounds like conscription to me. He says he's opposed to the PATRIOT Act, but he voted for both the original bill and its re-authorization in 2005.

Foreign policy? Biden voted for the war on Iraq.

Voted for NAFTA 1993. Let Anita Hill hang during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, which he also chaired.

Voted yes on enlarging NATO to include Eastern Europe: This is a key element of neocon policy guaranteed to start a nuclear war with Russia. Russia can not allow U.S. missiles in Poland any more than the U.S. could allow a gun to its head in Cuba. Cheney and the other maniacs are dead wrong in their assumption that Russia will back down.

And Biden/Obama also support the recent Real ID Act, which almost supercedes the Patriot Act in terms of a violation of privacy. I don't think either Obama or McCain would do much about it when in office, if not actively promote it. That's why I'm advocating protesting the act if it's enforced in 2009. - Vadim

Legalizing marijuana would probably be a step in the right direction because even now the law can't stop people from smoking. But when we can go into the store and buy nice clean bud, instead of taking a risk buying bud that might be laced, things are a million times safer for pot smokers. People's minds are so much more open, polite, and relaxed when they have been shown the light. if you say the world needs to be a better place with people who don't take everything so serious, let there be marijuana. God made weed, man made alcohol. Whom do you trust now?

Joseph Stiglitz (Nobel winner for economics and was chief economist at World Bank) said while on a trip to India, that 600 million people from India (out of the one billion) have been left out of the development fold of globalization. So, obviously, all India is not going to migrate into middle class, if anything the inequality is far, far worse now, after the advent of globalization.

Similarly newspaper reports have pointed out how Chinese workers are working in appalling conditions, to churn out the low cost products, with poor pay, cramped rooms, no accident or health insurance benefits, no job security, no overtime, long working hours - so who is actually benefiting from this sort of globalization? Corporates, of course, and the few privileged people of India and China who have been able to get educated in engineering and technology. Not the vast majority of population.

No one really seems to understand the Victorian era. It's not like they didn't have sex during that entire period, or that it only happened between heterosexuals who were married to each other. What characterized that era was total public denial that any other kind of sex existed while everyone went about doing as they wished behind closed doors as long as they didn't get caught.

To translate this for Americans, it's like all the Southern Baptists who preach against smoking, drinking, gambling, and dancing and raise a scandal anytime someone gets caught at it, but still, everyone knows that behind closed doors, when other Baptists aren't around, anything goes.

If you're going to critize this, at least do it unbiased. People have to much freedom, they take it for granted. i think a week of martial law would fix most things. As a high school student,I know that when you leave a group of people together without rules, they will ultimately do wrong. Regardless of what people say, humans are inherently bad.

Wow. That's just fantastic.
