LOOK WHO'S COMING TO DINNER AT THE BLAIR HOUSE

Think Progress - In December, President-elect Obama asked the White House if he and his family could move into Blair House - the White House's guest house - a week early, so that his daughters Malia and Sasha could start school. The White House rebuffed them, saying the house was already booked for another guest. A White House source added that "Blair House was appalled" by the request.

After weeks of speculation, the mystery guest that trumped the President-elect and his family has finally been revealed. The White House offered the house to John Howard, the former Prime Minister of Australia who is set to receive a Medal of Freedom. Instead of arranging other accommodations for Howard's one-night stay, the Bush administration told the Obama family to stay in a hotel for two weeks. (Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Colombian President Álvaro Uribe, who are also receiving the Medal of Freedom, opted to find other accommodations.)

On MSNBC's "Countdown," Bloomberg journalist Margaret Carlson revealed that when the White House turned down Obama's request in early December, it had not yet even invited Howard to stay at the Blair House:

She also pointed out that Blair House has "119 rooms with 35 bathrooms. Howard wouldn't even have to share a sink with the Obamas."

Howard, a darling of the right wing, was one of Bush's biggest cheerleaders whom Bush has called his "mate of steel" for standing with him on Iraq and being the only leader of an industrialized nation - besides Bush, of course - to refuse to sign the Kyoto Protocol.

Leave it to Bush to consistently behave in a petty, mean spirited manner. This is appalling. I am embarrassed for the world to see Bush to behave in this manner. He doesn't seem to even care if he is seen as acting presidentially. He makes me ill.

Last time I checked, Bush was still the President of the United States. And Obama has called it correctly, that there is "only one President at a time." I've been to a reception at Blair House, it's not that big. A lot of the rooms and bathrooms are staff. Don't get me wrong, I voted for Obama, but he isn't the second coming as some are treating him.

Shame on whomever made the decision to keep the Obamas out of the Blair House for this trying period in their little girls' lives. On the other hand, all these unforeseen circumstances can only strengten them as a family unit, and they'll be the better for it.If I had a house in the area, I would let them have it for as long as they needed it or wanted it---so there!

Tution at Sidwell Friends:
Elementary School - $28,442
Middle and Upper Schools - $29,442.

Federal Suite at the Hay Adams - $6,000 per night.

Pretty "trying period", eh?

Please, it's two weeks and the girls are 7 & 10 and flexible. They'll get tired of living in the bubble, but I imagine for now it's all pretty cool.

I am an executive recruiter. It is unconscionable that living arrangements and making an executive's family comfortable in transition be bungled in such a way. President Elect Obama holds the most critical executive position in this nation. It is an embarrassment that this was ill-managed, particularly by the Bush team. A gracious finesse on their part would have made this transition seamless and reflected the reverence it deserved.

I don't think that either the words "gracious" or "finesse" are words whose meanings are known even vaguely to the ham-handed Bush team, 4:23, so it's doubtful if they'd have had the ability to conjoin those two words and put them into practice in this instance; I certainly cannot think of any past instance where they have done so.

Sam,

Doesn't the White House have a couple of guest bedrooms, that could have accommodated Mr. Howard?

It was petty.

It was vintage Bush.
