WORD

I know I know you. I'm just not sure from which movement. - - Guy to a woman at the inaugural Peace Ball

Possibly another underlying factor stems from the malevolent situations musicians frequently have to perform in, hence the development of a reactive, callous indifference. Consider it a defense mechanism to preserve sanity. In a sound engineer's effort to achieve control and obtain separation, stages and sound studios become acoustically hostile environments to perform in, especially for acoustic instrumentalists. Ambient sound is shunned by the engineer, they call it leakage. That means the performer hears little else live from himself or his fellow musicians, if they are there at all, than a muffled caricature of the sound, relying instead on some artificially assembled mix delivered through headphones or monitors. Seldom does a working musician have an opportunity to truly hear and interact with other musicians in a way that resembles what is eventually projected to an audience. It is just a fact of life and they get used to it.
