Telegraph, UK - Manufacturers are struggling to keep up with demand, and many gun shops running low on stock as the US public buys weapons in anticipation of tighter controls. On the campaign trail last year Mr Obama proposed restoring a Clinton-era ban on several types of military-style semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines, as well as background checks for buyers at gun shows, and other "common-sense measures".

His pledge has proved a potent catalyst, with manufacturers recording soaring profits since his election. "Since November, sales of firearms - in particular handguns and semi-automatic hunting and target rifles - are fast outpacing inventory," said Steve Sanetti, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the US firearms and ammunition industry. "Americans are clearly concerned about their ability to be able to purchase these products in an uncertain future," he added.

Smith and Wesson last week posted third-quarter profits of $2.4 million, reversing a loss of $1.8 million over the same period the previous year, as its pistol sales leapt 46 per cent and tactical rifle sales more than tripled. Another manufacturer, Sturm Ruger & Co. reported an 81 per cent increase in takings. Demand for certain ammunition is also outstripping supply as enthusiasts build up stockpiles ahead of threatened tax increases on bullets.

Robbie, if a fellow citizen someday comes to your aid with a firearm (or the criminal is simply deterred by the possibility of you being armed), what words would you choose to describe them? I'm an Obama supporter, but let's be fair to ALL views. -Brian

When guns are outlawed only the cops will have guns. I hope you 'progressives' feel comfortable with that thought.

But if they are truly forbidden, won't the cops be unarmed too?

Seriously, all they are doing is getting the automatics and milspec stuff off the streets and if you already have a "grandfathered" AK-47, they aren't going to take it away. The truth is that America is swimming in guns, so much so that the narco gangs in Mexico have gringos buy them submachine guns and other combat weaponry so they can go on killing each other.

What's rather annoying is that the people who've so far chosen not to buy a firearm --notionally the most trusting and peaceful-- are the ones to be most deprived by the prospective restrictions. Does that seem ...perverse... to anyone else?

And of course as Anon819 pointed out, the idea that only cops and the military will have access to significant weapons can hardly be reassuring to anyone who's not a 'Love Me I'm A Liberal'.

There really are two sides to this. While crime rates really do go down in areas wherein criminals know gun ownership is high, weapons are likely to be used when they're at hand. So it's a devilish sort of trade-off, isn't it? Do you want to tell your grandchildren how you killed grandma because you thought she might be a burglar? Or perhaps you could demand a little more justice, a little more opportunity for the world you're leaving behind when you're gone.

you have to remember one thing guns don't have the power to kill it takes a person behind that gun to pull the trigger. And it is our right to keep and bare arms in this county ... But that don't mean that you need to own a mac 10 or a ak47 to excute that right. There are millions of hunts in this county that use their gun in a responcible manor and way should they be punished for that actions of the few.

Sorry to say gentlemen but without guns all of us would be in alot of trouble. What do you plan on doing if a thief breaks into your house with a knife/gun. You would be unarmed oooooonooooo. I know that if someone comes into my house i will be prepared. And also what about hunting???? It has been a father son tradition for a very long time. Do you really want to be the ones to take that away from so many people? Bottom line is its people like you that ruin this country.
