The guy on the TV in the next room sure sounded like Richard Nixon, the measured unctuous quality, spin carefully wrapped in a tone of deep thought, and a slow, tedious rhythm without dynamics. I got up to find out what it was about and discovered that it wasn't Nixon at all but Barack Obama. Suddenly I realized something that had bothered me about Obama from the start: echoes of those sounds of contrived solemnity and sense that soon fell on the floor like a flower's dead leaves and which had led us to such a sorry place. Sounds aren't policies, to be sure, but they can make you a little more careful. - Sam Smith
