Change - A twelve-year study has found . . . that those studying courses that had online elements moved up in performance ranking from the 50th to the 59th percentile - suggesting that online education is not just an alternative, but can provide a better learning experience. Whether it's the simple novelty of working on a computer, or a symptom of working alone and concentrating is unclear.

Computer based learning should be an extremely valuable adjunct to live teaching for many reasons. But as with any relatively new innovation, there is a lot of snake oil out there, and there will be more.

Ben Franklin's invention of the lightning rod has saved millions of lives, and countless dollars worth of property. Its utility has been absolutely demonstrated for over 200 years. But there were, and still are, a lot of snake oil salesman in the lightning rod field.
