We might wish that, if we must have a political myth, it should not contain so much moral ambivalence, such distance from known reality and so much artificial manufacture. But looking at it from a literary, rather than a political or moral, perspective, it has the stuff of all good legends: a flawed hero, tragedy, triumph, ruthlessness, danger and inexorability. . . Good comment, apart from there having been no magnificence except in our heads, put there by people with an agenda.
