Electronic Frontier Foundation - The Recording Industry Association of America has announced an update to Music-Rules, its "curriculum" for teaching copyright law to school kids. For instance, the RIAA tells kids, "Never copy someone else's creative work without permission from the copyright holder" - omitting the important right to make creative fair use of existing content. It also coins a misleading term, "songlifting," (which the curriculum says is "just as bad as shoplifting"). The updated curriculum goes a step further and asks kids to contact their local media and act as the RIAA's own unpaid public relations staff: "Challenge: Take your campaign a step further by contacting the editor of your community newspaper or the director of your community cable television station to see if you can submit an article or video about your campaign."

This RIAA nonsense feels like a wierd example of the law of diminishing returns. The campaign here resmembles the 'Mowhawk Valley Formula." The PR industry was using that formula for busting up unions in the beginning. The industry whizzes later helped buttress nuclear power and vilify the USSR with great success.

Now instead of whipping us up into frenzy of killing foreigners or punishing the poor, it's being used to sue freshman for listen to music. You can't call this entropy, but it's off by mere degrees. The whole industry is prodigal.

These are very delicate PR techniques being used here. But these idiot executives and lawyers in the industry are swinging them like 2*4's. Edward Bernays and Ivy Lee must be turning over in their graves. Their scientific social experiments are gonna have a vitiated control group if the Ministry of Truth doesn't corral these Armani cowboys.
