WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE POOR IN LIBERAL POLITICS?

With the middle class nearly gone there is no one left to champion the poor. It used to be the poor could climb up into the middle class every once in awhile and maybe remember what it was like but now the walls have gone up and the poor have been left to rot. - Gimmer

WHY LIBERALS MISREAD OBAMA

I have to thoroughly disagree here. There were no secrets during the Obama campaign- the notion that liberals have somehow been "duped" is absurd. Obama has made major strides in the last 9 months- he's been charged with literally having to reshape the entire country and drag it back from failure. He's doing a pretty admirable job.

The problem is that Democrats are unwilling to find common ground amongst themselves. Everyone has their own agenda and they seem unwilling to act with a shred of passion on anything that isn't in line with their own beliefs.

There is plenty I don't like about Obama's policies, but he's the President I voted for and if we can't stand together with him, then nothing is going to get done. There is a Democratic majority across the board right now- lets stop kicking the ground wondering "what went wrong" and start using the tools we do have to make a difference

Frustrated liberals are welcome to register & vote Green and to get involved with their local Green Party, no questions asked. - Scott McLarty

GREAT RESULTS OF THE WAR ON DRUGS

Actually the rangers
are supposed to do things like catch timber poachers. But how can rangers keep and eye out for logging companies that decide to cut a few extra acres beyond their allotment when the rangers are sent off trying to find pot growers. - m

TEXAS RIGHT WING HISTORY CURRICULUM COULD INFECT NATIONAL EDUCATION

Maybe Mexico would be interested in recovering their long-lost property.

I know the rest of the country loves to blame Texas for GWB, but that overlooks numerous facts. First, GWB is from a New England family that was intentionally sent to Texas during the early days of the economic war between the Eastern banking establishment and the Western oil industry. GHWB became the bankers' mole in cowboy territory and the family has continued to perform that function since.

GWB's phony vacation ranch in Crawford is all any real Texan needed to see to know that his cowboy act was just that: an act to get votes from the Christian extremists and other ignorant middle-American types. As for having been the Governor of Texas, well, he could have been elected governor of any state his backers chose just on the basis of his name. The truth is that the governor of Texas has less power than any other governor in the US and in actual practice probably has less power than the lieutenant governor. It was the perfect first political office for a known underachiever and was purchased for him by wealthy out-of-state backers.

So, if you want to lay blame for the mess the country is in, the GOP and their wealthy donors from every state are the place to start.

TSA JAILS STUDENT CARRYING ARABIC FLASH CARDS

Cf. H.L. Mencken's account of a man being arrested around 1917 for having left a German grammar in a phone booth. - Axel in Montreal

When teaching new people about How To Be A Spook, even the US intelligence community emphasizes over and over that the only way to be safe is to be invisible. Competent members of the Spooks, Terrorists And Allied Trades union never do anything to make themselves seem other than a conventional, religious, slightly dull conservative who has no interest in the outside world whatsoever. If someone has a German grammar or Arabic flash cards, they're for 90% sure a student or a professor, not a mad bomber!

PHILADELPHIA LIBRARY PLANS TO CLOSE BECAUSE OF LACK OF FUNDS

I wonder how many hours (minutes?) worth of the Iraq/Afghanistan wars would pay for a year's worth of library system operation?

POPULATION

It is misleading to claim
there is a "taboo" on mentioning the population issue in the context of stopping climate change. Rather, posing the issue as the Optimum Population Trust does is a disservice to effective action. To be sure stabilization of population, all other factors held constant, will mitigate carbon emissions, but the proven way of encouraging effective family planning is by empowering women in their family and society and reducing poverty; simply read the UN documents on this issue. And this requires shifts in resource allocation from wasteful and destructive military spending to better meeting human and nature's needs, including solarizing our global energy infrastructure and organic farming. Further, cap and trade is not a real alternative to family planning nor is it the best approach to curbing carbon emissions, rather the best option is promotion of family planning coupled with aggressive promotion of energy conservation and carbon neutral energy generation. - David Schwartzman, PhD, Washington, DC

SCHOOL BOARD CONSIDERING SELLING NAMING RIGHTS

What are the next logical steps? Renaming your city after a local benefactor? Selling the rights to rename your State's name to some large corporation like Microsoft or Google? Having secret bidding to rename the Washington Monument? Or maybe people won't become concerned until we have to sell the right to govern ourselves, and have to learn a foreign language like Chinese in order to get a job. - DaTheorist

Yesterday, the local high school, on their electronic marquee, had posted the following: "Thanks to our Corporate Partners." It's everywhere. It's everywhere. - Elder Lady

I love the term "Partners." It's just so fatuous. One of those "corporate" words that means nothing but is supposed to sound profound. Another example of genuine communication being replaced by simple-minded posturing.
