HEALTH CARE DEBATE

What has happened to our society when the populus believes health care, education (beyond the 12th grade) and basic public utilities should be made a "minimum reasonable quality of life for everyone?" Where has the American idea of taking responsibility for one's life gone? Do American's now truly believe that the government should collect maximum taxes possible and provide for your (regulated) health care, provide you with a college education, and pay or help to pay for your utilities? What has happened to save 10% of your income from the day you start working for retirement to assist with your child's education after high school, to cover you on a rainy day need? People will not conserve their utility use if someone else pays the bill. We all have a responsibility to work and take care of ourselves and our families. Assistance should only be provided for a limited time to pick someone up and get them going again. . . unless they have completely life devastating mental illnesses or some major medical issue that prevents them from working.

EVANGELICALS SUBVERTING MILITARY

It should be no wonder that military personnel are committing suicide at an alarming rate. It used to be that the military was a "band of brothers (including sisters). Now, in the Air Force especially, it is a band of Christians who promote their faith ahead of their oath to the Constitution. The lack of leadership shown by general officers and senior non-commissioned officers in establishing clear limits on religious fanaticism has seriously hurt our ability to defend ourselves. You want to improve morale and unit effectiveness in the Air Force? Get rid of the born again Christians. Simply put, if they are not willing to respect the non-discrimination laws, court martial them. They will think that they are suffering for Christ, and our Air Force can once again become a band of brothers. - A Man

OBAMA WOULD HAVE STUDENTS STAY IN SCHOOL LONGER

I would love to know where in most town budgets the additional dollars for busing, air conditioning, teacher pay etc. are going to come from. Here in Massachusetts many if not most towns are-pink slipping teachers. I find it hard to believe we'll have money to comply with this nonsense. Moreover, we should all know that the quality of the education counts for much more than the quantity.

Lastly, the notion that students must put their nose to the grindstone more often is misguided. Nowhere in these bureaucratic proposals is time made for the development of imagination, fitness, and social skills. These are critical to forming well rounded, happy people who are good citizens. Summer vacations provide ample time for all of this. Whether kids gather freely to play, attend summer camps, read for the own enjoyment or do any number of other things in an unstructured environment it is for their own benefit. Proposals like these seem more useful for softening minds and preventing protest and resistance in the work place. - Lars

Now that we exhausted all of the possible avenues of torture of children by testing, it is time to ramp up the hours and days on which they can be tested. - m

THE HEALTH INSURANCE RACKET: ONLY MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL HAS IT BETTER

Not so. Internet service is similarly monopolized. Try to get a simple DSL account from someone other than Verizon in Massachusetts. Your choices for DSL are Verizon and Comcast. It's very cozy.

BOOKSHELF: ONLY THE SUPER-RICH CAN SAVE US

Ralph Nader and Sam Smith are both openly and willingly performing the sniveling cowards' role of servant of the elitist paradigm here. This sub-rational trash goes beyond the pale of disgusting. No friend to humanity would ever have published this terrible poison: only the ignorant and enemies of humanity support the overpay-underpay that is killing us all and this planet. Shame on you for cheerleading for egregious economic injustice, Sam Smith. Deep shame is upon you. Go crouch down and lick the hands that feed you - and may posterity forget that you were my countryman. - pay justice

Bitch about Nader all you want, it doesn't change the fact that things aren't fair. Some people have way more than they deserve. Boo hoo, I know. It drives me crazy too. But we need solutions. Things that work in the real world. And no idea is to crazy to be adduced. Nader hasn't capitulated. And the rich aren't a different species. If we were to achieve an egalitarian society, then you would have to make friends and work alongside former investment bankers and generals.

At one time, it was the rich who provided most of America's public works - and employed the poor to create them. As our federal and state governments have grown in power, the rich have retreated to serve those areas that the government is first to abandon whenever their profligacy trashes the economy: universities, libraries, arts institutions, medical institutions, public parks and open spaces, scholarships, etc. There is a vast amount of unrecognized public service and generosity from America's rich . . . but a government addicted to buying votes with taxpayer's money isn't likely to draw attention to it.

It seems that Nader has gone over totally to the anti-democratic tendencies of the very very wealthy, who enjoy pulling strings from the center of the web to knock off anybody who might threaten their social dominance. Population control, slow growth, high taxation of income -- these are all tools the very rich use to beat down the middle class. Nader openly performs the role of servant of the elite. Sickening.

HUMANITIES DISAPPEAR AS BUSINESS STUDIES BOOM

Engineering has also lost out to business. Both are the result of an elite culture which downgrades the importance of work and creation in favor of dealing.

SEX OFFENDER LAWS ARE HURTING OUR CHILDREN

The claim is always that these offenders have "robbed a child of their innocence". My son's innocence was lost when he was incarcerated at barely 18 for sex with an underage (but experienced) teenage girl. My child will go through a life of hell for a normal sexual experience while this young lady lives her life. Politicians think this is just fine. You're absolutely right - all doors are barred for him. His hopes and dreams are gone. Whose children are being saved, anyway? - SOSVA

BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW SOCIALISM DID THIS, TOO

Socialist regimes have tended to be quite reactionary, when it comes to 'family values'. Eric Honecker's last argument for leaving the wall up was that it kept AIDS out of Eastern Europe, by blocking the spread of "decadent Western sexual mores" (i.e homosexuals).

FLU SHOT RESISTANCE

More power to the elbow of those who refuse to take vaccines lying down. The science is flawed, the efficacy is questionable, the historical impact of insufficiently tested pharmaceuticals is littered with the bodies of those who were adversely affected. More emphasis on encouraging the adoption of healthier lifestyle and habits -- especially in the area of diet and exercise is far more preferable than the continued promotion of suspicious chemical prophylactics . Time more people than just a few sensible nurses woke up to reality and began to take responsibility fo their own health and that of their children more seriously. - Rand A

PITTSBURGH POLICE ABUSE AT G20 MEETING CONT'D

A little harsh on cab drivers , aren't you? Who would you trust more with your wallet or your civil rights, a Pittsburgh cop or a Pittsburgh cab driver? - John A. Joslin, (ex-cabbie and ex-Detroit Police Academy cadet)

HAS PENTAGON LAUNCHED WAR AGAINST OBAMA?

An alternate theory is that Obama has agreed with this assessment all along and McChrystal's report is the start of a new PR offensive to shore up public support for the war, in line with Andy Card's dictum that "you don't introduce new products in August." I find the leak of this report highly suspicious, coming on the heels of the arrests of the Afghan-Americans in another shaky-looking "terrorism" case.

MORE EVIDENCE THAT THE 21 YEAR OLD DRINKING LIMIT DOESN'T WORK

The arbitrary change in the legal drinking age would only be important if there was strict police enforcement. The same number of college student would occasionally go drinking, the only difference would be that they might be doing it legally if the 'drinking age' were 18.

I read no proof in the article that the 21 'drinking age' isn't working. At least, in regard to having any established 'drinking age' at all. Drinking is just one more experience that young adults have to learn to deal with, if desired. Not only with the physical effects, but with the frustration with civil code.
To me it seems far more important to merely have the age consistent from state to state, to prevent automobile accidents.

Many people are married before they are twenty-one years old. And while I thought it extremely unfair to be drafted and possibly be killed in Viet Nam, now that I am older I can see the reason for keeping a 'drinking age' at 21. Most people younger than that are intellectually, emotionally, and hormonally immature; it's better to place barriers between alcohol and the young. -DaTheorist

It is clear that 18, 19 and 20-year old adults are treating the 21-year old drinking age law with the contempt that it deserves. - Walter F. Wouk

HOW THE BAUCUS PLAN SCREWS OLDER PEOPLE

By 50 most people have problems finding work if because of corporate profit enhancement they get sacked. Which means they are among the population surplus. So it's only logical that they should be allowed to do without insurance: a certain number will die because of not being able to afford medical care and thereby decrease that surplus.

WHY SALT TASTES GOOD ON ICE CREAM

There are many taste counterpoints that provide a fullness of flavor. A pinch of cinnamon or sugar added to spinach will smooth out the acidity of the natural oxalates. The merest dash of table salt will do the same for coffee. A hint of lemon juice will make the taste of raspberries blossom in the mouth. Good cooks know these secrets and many more, and that is why food in a restaurant often tastes better than what is prepared at home.

But not all salts are created equal. In brine pickling one needs pickling salt, kosher sea salt or unrefined sea salt. Use refined table salt and the pickling fails. Refined table salt loses the trace minerals available in unrefined sea salt, so it doesn't offer the nutrients one could get from salt. Personally I think refined salt tastes too much like stress.

WINNING THE HEARTS AND MINDS? DIDN'T WE TRY THAT BEFORE?

Actually this is worse than Vietnam. At least in Vietnam we had the pretext that we were "invited in" by a putatively legal government. In Afghanistan no such invitation exists. Of course, none of this matters. We are there because somehow it is opportune. Not for the average Joe, of course, but for faceless plutocrats and their handmaidens. Has the administration actually ever explained clearly why we are in Afghanistan? Or why it is so important, to the exclusion of lots of other venues in which we could easily become embroiled using presumably similar rationales?

EIGHT PERCENT OF NEW JERSEY VOTES THINK OBAMA IS THE ANTI-CHRIST

It has to be the people from South Jersey. The people from South Jersey are from another planet.

What has happened, dumbass, is that a lot of people's antecedents were not as crooked and heartless as yours, thereby being unable to accumulate piles of wealth. Some people would prefer to adequately clothe, shelter, and provide rudimentary healthcare to their children than save ten per cent.
