WHITE HOUSE TRACKING AND STORING WEB COMMENTS

Washington Times - The White House is collecting and storing comments and videos placed on its social-networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and You Tube without notifying or asking the consent of the site users. . . Defenders of the White House actions said the Presidential Records Act requires that the administration gather the information and that it was justified in taking the additional step of asking a private contractor to "crawl and archive" all such material. . . Susan Cooper, a spokeswoman for National Archives and Records Administration, said the presidential records law applies to "social media" and to public comments "received by the president or immediate staff.". . . The National Legal and Policy Center, a government ethics watchdog, said archiving the sites would have a "chilling effect" on Web site users who might wish to leave comments critical of the administration.

I don't get it. If someone didn't want their comment to be read and remembered, why would they write it?

Now, if it were to be turned over to the FBI so that the writer could be scheduled for harassment, then it would make sense for everyone to object.

But just tracking and storing? Maybe I don't understand what the words mean.

If Bush had done this 'progressives' would have soiled themselves. Obama does it and *shrug*.

What's the German translation for "If you've done nothing wrong, you have no reason to be afraid of this"?

I was surprised with Mairead's comment. At first blush, this sounded kinda bad.

But, from one viewpoint if/when some criminal is found that does something bad, their comments can be traced back to find out who he/she had been in contact with (preposition).

In response to 08:05, I would have been concerned if this had happened under Dubya's reign. There was No transparency in government, and seemed more Orwellian than George! There wasn't one good thing that eminated from Washington between 2000 and 2008, Economically, Socially, Religiously, or Politically.

The kinds of things talked about in that Wash. Times article should be limited, and there really should be court orders like used to be required.

Just like fences make good neighbors, and doors with locks keep honest people honest, so to do Laws make good government Good.

And so, inspite of this administrations best intentions, they really should keep their "eye on the ball", and govern themselves, knowing that there is a good chance that some Richard-Head might be again voted into office.

Note: Hello to Washington. If you're reading this, that means you got nothing better to do, and you should be ashamed of yourself.
