ONE THING WE CAN AGREE ON
According to a Marist poll, whether you are black, white, over or under 45, male or female, earning more or less than $50,000, the phrase "whatever" is more annoying than "anyway," "you know," or "at the end of the day." Those who found it least annoying - only slightly worse than "you know" - were those living in the Northeast. While latinos found it most annoying, almost twice as bad as "you know."

whatever...
How about 'It is what it is'?
I recently heard someone use that phrase three times in a span of a few minutes of conversation. He was talking about economic trends, then said, 'It is what it is'. Then, a minute or so further into the conversation, he said, 'Again, it is what it is.' Finally, another couple of sentences later, he said, 'Again, as I mentioned before, it is what it is.'
To the moon! One of these days... to the moon!
I guess people find it annoying because "whatever" has more power than any of those other phrases; it's seriously dismissive, especially with the correct whatever-tone. I recently retired from teaching so I heard "whatever" often, though rarely directed at me so I maybe am a bit too generous, but I secretly admired so much rebellion so efficiently packaged. Now don't get me started on "no problem."
