FACEBOOK FOUNDER: PRIVACY JUST A PASSING FAD

-- One can always supply inaccurate but plausible info on Facebook and protect one's real info by subterfuge. I never give social network sites my accurate name and info. My husband works in fraud prevention, and he says that many people become vulnerable to identity theft by allowing too much sensitive info on social networking sites.

STUPID NETWORK EXECUTIVE TRICKS

-- There is a fundamental problem with the idea of "owning" art. Copyright needs to be fundamentally changed so that a copyright owner has the right to profit from a work for a very limited time, in a very limited way. . . after which the work becomes part of the public domain, for later generations to enjoy, as a part of our shared culture. Oh wait, that's how it used to actually work! - Hawk Wind

NY TIMES TO ADOPT PAID VISITS

-- Hey, keeping the likes of Maureen Dowd, Tom Friedman and David Brooks away from the rest of the net is worth $$ to me.

PASSINGS: DAVID MALLERY

-- He had become a dear friend of mine these last 3 years after we met at a conference in Colorado (where we both were speakers and one of his past seminar participants -- my wife -- introduced us).

Beyond his intellectual eye for detail and quality, his unapologetic heart and love for other's stories won me over that first day. It was his never-ending interest in the lives of those who gravitated towards him that made one understand how his influence could be so boundless and graceful.

We had a standing breakfast date at the Ritz every time I came to Philadelphia. We were supposed to have another early morning tete-a-tete two weeks from today. I simply ache that he won't be there to embrace once again, to tell him about my wife and children, to pick his brain about what it means to educate, and to simply 'break bread' with one of the good souls that still walk this good earth of ours.

Thank you for sharing your story, especially the line where he is able to criticize your pen/attack while still reminding you that he's a fan of yours the entire time.

And thank you for giving others of us a chance to pause, even if we cannot fully (yet) understand his passing. - Christian Long

-- I became acqainted with David when my husband attended one of his seminars. We were newly married and wanted to combine the trip with our honeymoon. Not only did Mr. Mallery allow me to come to the retreat center but included me in everything, from meals to workshops. I'll cherish that memory forever. What a very, very special man. And, if he ever met a person, he never forgot them - ever. He was a jewel. - Cynthia Schmidt

HE LIKES HOT DOGS, SHE LIKES VEGAN; LET'S CALL THE WHOLE THING OFF

-- I just flushed my toilet 3 times for no reason. Take that, humorless scolds.

-- You should have filed this one under the "elite ethnography" category.

DRUG WAR CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF DISASTROUS FAILURE

-- This is not a 40 year failure, but rather a 96 year failure. A "drug war" may have been pronounced 40 years ago, but it has been going on since at least the 1914 passage of the Harrison Act.

Drug wars have gone on for centuries. Once upon a time, execution was the solution to the illegal use of chocolate, coffee and tea. Most of us now take these dangerous drugs in stride. Indeed, as I write this, above my monitor hangs a picture of my not yet two year old grandson in the throes of his first bout with chocolate. Had he been in some areas of the world in the 16-17th centuries, he would have been summarily put to death, along with his parents. How little we have progressed in hundreds of years. - M

SUPER BOWL TO RUN RELIGIOUS EXTREMIST ADS

-- Showing anti-abortion commercials during programming that is largely viewed by a group of excited alcohol and testosterone filled males and socially programmed females is designed to do what?

ACLU HITS EXCESSIVE COMPUTER SEARCHES BY CUSTOMS POLICE

-- My disabled partner [recently made a trip] to visit his family. He has a rare genetic disorder that causes all of his joints to dislocate spontaneously multiple times a day. It is a very painful condition which means he can barely walk without a cane and cannot maintain any still position for very long. When he told a screener that it was literally impossible for him to hold his arms straight out to the side for several minutes as requested, he was declared uncooperative and pulled out for "special" screening which is apparently a euphemism for torture. His cane was taken away from him throughout this long process and when it finally ended, his carry-on items and the cane were deposited at the end of a forty foot walk which he was required to make with no assistance. Every bit of this was clearly a violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act, and showed a complete lack of regard for handicapped individuals that will eventually result in the death by screening of a disabled person if nothing is done about it.
